Week 7- Authorship

A few weeks ago, we talked about authorship and what I meant. Of course, the reiterate this of course being what the author means in what he draws or writes. But also, what it means to the readers. Does what the readers think the meaning is more important than the author’s. Now at the time we looked at what Roland Barthes talks about in his writing "Death of the Author." Roland believed that the author's given meaning is lost over time has more viewers consume the art piece and interpret the piece differently.  Which is something that you can watch happen. You could look at any form of media and see this happen.

Last time we looked at the image above, Why the man is in this room, and whose meeting him. Is it death taking him after so long, maybe an ally coming to save him. What's with the eye and triangle carved into the wall. This is what I used as an example last time. What was your interpretation of the image. What do you think this character is. If you read the story, you would learn that the character on the ground is locked up, having dreams of redoing it all. But at first glance, you don’t see the shackle around his neck. You might just see him has locked in a room left to rot.

Or perhaps this image above. From the title alone “Encounter with the winter Spirit” we can somewhat tell what the story is going to be about. I also believe that you could infer this has well. The dark blues and whites painting a frozen landscape, the characters heavier clothing and, of course, the ice spreading through the air. But why was is this character out here. Why aren’t they somewhere warm. Was the character out and about when it froze. Or perhaps he had to leave the warmth for some reason. When it comes to writing it’s a little easier to find the Author’s meaning. Not saying that people don’t find their own meanings, or perhaps they find meaning in nothing sometimes even. For an artist showing your meaning and reasoning is harder than saying a poet.

Perhaps that is part of the art though, perhaps it helps strengthen the story itself rather than lay it all bare. Lat the audience try to find their own, that way when they find the truth it can be that much more surprising for the Audience. This is one of the reasons I think looking at historic art and trying to find the meaning is hard, because of the fact we aren’t from that time. We don’t think like they did, or went through the trials, and tribulations they have. Experiences play has big has a role in Art as it does, in writing. Which Is a major part of life in general not just in the world of Art.
